“The Garamba in the DRC rewarded with a batch of South African white rhinos to restore its biodiversity”

The planet’s biodiversity is in real danger these days. Therefore, the creation of sanctuaries and nature reserves, to protect the natural habitats of different species, is fundamental. It is with this in mind that the Garamba was created in the province of Haut-Uélé, in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), to protect the habitat of different species, such as elephants, giraffes, hippos, buffaloes, okapis etc. . In this dynamic of conservation of endangered species, the Garamba sanctuary has just been rewarded with a batch of South African white rhinos signed “Kibali Gold Mine”, a subsidiary of Barrick Gold, a Canadian mining and development company. mining sites in the DRC.

In 2022, the project to restore the population of white rhinos in Garamba National Park has been announced and has just been successfully completed this Friday, June 9, 2023. African Park and the Congolese Institute for Nature Conservation (ICCN) will oversee this project to restore the population of white rhinos in their natural environment and essential for their long-term survival. The white rhino population in Garamba had been nearly decimated by poachers and wars.

The project of coming from these animals in this park of Garamba which occupies 20% of the surface of the province of Haut-Uélé must be profitable. “I do think that the arrival of the white rhinos will boost tourism and will also force us, both the central and provincial government, to work on the infrastructures so that we are very frequentable,” said Christophe Nanga, governor of Haut- Uele. Moreover, the conservation of biodiversity is fundamental for the survival of the planet, essential to fight against climate change and has an important role to play in the war against poverty.
