The Salomon Kalonda Della Idi case continues to make headlines in the Democratic Republic of Congo. The Special and Political Advisor of the opponent and declared presidential candidate of December 2023, Moïse Katumbi, was transferred to the Ndolo military prison after a brief hearing at the Gombe military prosecutor’s office in Kinshasa on Saturday June 10. . The arm of Moïse Katumbi is, among other things, prosecuted for illegal possession of weapons, but also of intelligence with Rwanda and the terrorist movement of M23 to overthrow the power of Felix Tshisekedi in order to install a Katangese national there.
This transfer comes ten days after his arrest and follows a series of searches of his residences and those of his mother and his boss, Moïse Katumbi, both in Kinshasa and in Lubumbashi, capital of the province of Haut- Katanga. According to military intelligence, Salomon Kalonda Della Idi would have prepared a coup d’etat which would end in the installation of a Katangese national at the head of the state.
Beyond this burning political news, the Democratic Republic of the Congo continues to face other important challenges, particularly economic and security. The country must also manage the preparation and organization of the Games of La Francophonie which will take place in 2023 in Kinshasa as well as the presidential elections scheduled for the same year.
Despite the difficulties, encouraging progress has been made in certain areas such as the modernization of the population with the signing of a memorandum of understanding for the issue of national identity cards or the fight against the illegal exploitation of mines thanks to collaboration with mining multinationals.
In short, the central position of the DRC in international news demonstrates the many challenges facing the country, but also the opportunities to be seized for its economic and social development.
