Title: Fuel shortage in Tshikapa: the reasons for the price increase
For the past few days, the inhabitants of Tshikapa, capital of the province of Kasai Oriental, have observed a considerable increase in the price of gasoline. Indeed, the liter of gasoline which sold between 2,800 and 3,000 Congolese Francs is now around 3,800 to 4,000 Congolese Francs.
According to economic operators, this increase is due to the scarcity of gasoline on the market. The depots are empty and fuel is often supplied from Angola, via the borders of Kandjaji, Kabuakala, Mwamwengu, Shambwanda and others. Unfortunately, the Angolan authorities took the decision to ban the export of this petroleum product to the Democratic Republic of Congo, causing a shortage of fuel in the region.
This increase in the price of fuel has also impacted the cost of transport in the town of Tshikapa. The motorcycle races which were at 500 FC were negotiated at 1000 FC on the day of the shortage.
The scarcity of gasoline in Tshikapa thus underlines the importance of better management of the province’s energy resources. Local authorities should work with local traders and transporters to identify preventive measures and ensure fuel supplies remain stable.
Pending an improvement in the situation, the inhabitants of Tshikapa must organize themselves to limit their fuel consumption and adopt alternative modes of transport.
