“DRC: Electric climate and political tensions as the presidential elections approach”

Political tensions continue to mark the Democratic Republic of Congo, with the approach of the presidential election next December. Jean-Claude Muyambo, leader of the Congolese Solidarity for Democracy party, publicly denounced the Tshisekedi administration’s clumsy strategy to oust Moïse Katumbi from the presidential race, which amplified the situation of political conflict between the parties.

In a media release, Muyambo criticizes the head of state, who would give himself the luxury of ordering spectacular arrests of his opponents, when he has not fulfilled his promises to the nation. For the opponent, the son of Tshisekedi will not be able to torpedo the results of the ballot boxes, because in the elections of December 2023, cheating will be difficult to put in place.

However, according to information published by Congo leaks, weapons are being planted in the farms of Moïse Katumbi, a situation which only increases tensions in an already electric climate. Indeed, soldiers would have been seen carrying out operations at the farms of Futuka and Kashobwe since Friday, June 09.

In such a situation, peace must be a top priority, because without it, all political ambitions can lead to destruction. The Head of State is therefore called upon to take initiatives to ease the current political tension.

At the same time, other subjects are agitating the country. Armed men are illegally occupying the residence of Moïse Katumbi, who fears an escalation of political violence in the country. Moreover, security is still threatened, after the kidnapping of more than a hundred people last April. Despite everything, the DRC has launched a new agricultural program in partnership with DEM and Bio-Agro Business, an initiative that could be the source of great progress for agriculture in the country. Finally, the French DRC now has national identity cards, which represents a crucial advance for the citizens of the country.

It is important to underline that the European Union is discussing with the DRC ambassador to Benelux to discuss the security and procedural situation for the upcoming elections. All of this once again highlights the complexity of the Congolese political situation, which requires multiple interventions and special attention.
