“Doctor Denis Mukwege, Nobel Peace Prize laureate, calls for justice to achieve peace in the DRC”

Doctor Denis Mukwege, Nobel Peace Prize 2018, participated in a meeting organized by the Vatican Fratelli Tutti Foundation along with 29 other Nobel Peace Prize laureates. During this meeting, Mukwege reiterated the importance of justice to restore peace in the regions in conflict, in particular in the East of the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC). He underlined that impunity is a major destabilizing factor in any conflict and therefore the final declaration of this organization must break down this “barrier” which imposes discriminatory rules and ideals.

Mukwege also called for an end to the culture of impunity, as it is deemed immoral and illegal, and contributes to sparking new conflicts. He pleaded for the strengthening of the effectiveness of the international rule of law and underlined this essential condition for establishing human fraternity.

The reflections and contributions of the Nobel Peace Prize laureates culminated in the drafting of a joint declaration on human fraternity, which was supported by Pope Francis.

Ultimately, Dr. Mukwege’s contribution highlights the need for real justice, not only in the DRC but also in other conflict areas, to achieve lasting peace.
