The Democratic Republic of Congo is in the spotlight, particularly following the arrest of Salomon Idi Kalonda Della, special adviser to Moïse Katumbi. The military intelligence services accuse him of illegally carrying arms and planning a coup. The latter was arrested on May 30 and transferred to the military prosecutor’s office last Saturday.
This arrest comes in a tense political context where the opposition has planned two new demonstrations in June in Kinshasa. For his lawyers and relatives, the arrest of Salomon Idi Kalonda Della is akin to the instrumentalization of state services for political purposes. They also denounced irregular searches carried out without their presence or that of their counsel.
The Congolese opposition has also denounced a harassment which only aims to muzzle the opposition and to veil the insufficiencies of the power in place. Dieudonné Bolengetenge, secretary general of Ensemble pour la République asks to stop this provocation which tarnishes the image of the country.
While waiting to see the outcome of this case, several other publications have dealt with the security situation in the province of Kongo central with a crisis that persists in 2023. The Democratic Republic of Congo has also launched a new agricultural program in partnership with DEM and Bio-Agro Business and has taken a crucial step towards the issuance of national identity cards.
In addition, ADF rebels continue to sow terror and paralyze education in the Rwenzori sector, while 100 people were kidnapped last April, with security still under threat.
The security situation and the electoral process in the DRC are also the subject of discussion with the European Union, which is discussing with the DRC’s ambassador to Benelux and to the EU. Finally, the Leopards of the DRC are preparing to face the Panthers of Gabon as part of CAN 2023.
However, there are fears of an escalation of political violence in the DRC, as armed men illegally stormed the residence of Moïse Katumbi
