Police repression of the LUCHA march in the DRC: demands for drinking water and lower water prices in Tshikapa.

In the Democratic Republic of Congo, the Congolese National Police (PNC) repressed the march of the citizen movement fight for change (LUCHA) this Friday, June 9 on the orders of the town hall of Tshikapa, capital of the province of Kasaï. Despite the ban from the city authority, demonstrators took to the streets to demand the drop in the cost of connecting Regideso, which went from 220 to 320 dollars.

Local sources report that the Congolese National Police (PNC) arrested a group of demonstrators in the commune of Kanzala. Deputy Mayor Jean Pierre Ntumba of the city of Tshikapa had banned this demonstration because of the political and social issues that do not allow the organization of this march.

However, the problem of drinking water remains a headache in the city of Tshikapa, capital of the province of Kasaï. The increase in Régideso bills drives the point home, according to one of the residents who testified to us on this subject.

The security situation is still worrying in Kongo Central province, where armed groups continue to sow terror and paralyze education.

On the other hand, the country has just taken a crucial step towards the issuance of national identity cards. Indeed, the Democratic Republic of Congo has launched a new agricultural program in partnership with DEM and Bio Agro Business, aimed at strengthening the country’s agricultural sector.

The European Union recently discussed the security situation and the electoral process in the DRC with the DRC ambassador to Benelux and to the European Union.

The country is also preparing for CAN 2023, where the Leopards of the DRC will face the Panthers of Gabon.

However, the political situation is still tense and there are fears of escalating violence in the country, notably with the illegal occupation of the residence of Moïse Katumbi. In addition, 100 people were kidnapped in April and security remains a major issue for the Democratic Republic of Congo.
