“Kwango Province: lifting of the curfew after the presence of Mobondo militiamen”

The province of Kwango, in the Democratic Republic of Congo, experienced a period of curfew from May 13 to June 15, from 8 p.m. to 6 a.m. This measure was taken to counter the incursions of Mobondo militiamen, with a heavy toll of 33 victims in May, in the province. The curfew was lifted after a meeting of the security committee which found that the situation was calm again, even if the militiamen are reported in the territory of PopoKabaka where they continue to disrupt the life of the population.

If militiamen were arrested during the curfew period, the government did not specify a number. Civil society organizations have denounced the recruitment of young people in the PopoKabaka region. Arrangements are being made by the provincial government to restore calm.

The province of Kwango has thus returned to the headlines in the DRC several times recently, due to the presence and actions of militiamen. The security situation is a source of concern for the population. If calm has returned for the moment, the public authorities will no doubt have to take drastic measures to restore security in agreement with the population.
