“The underside of peaceful alternation in the DRC: controversies and realities of Tshisekedi’s power”

Former special adviser to President Joseph Kabila has recently revived the debate regarding the truth of the ballot boxes for the 2018 presidential election in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC). Jean Mbuyu Luyongola explained the underside of the cards of the first peaceful and civilized alternation of power in the country, affirming that he was Joseph Kabila’s special envoy to Martin Fayulu Madidi to discuss the transfer of power. However, Fayulu reacted strongly to these claims, stating that no conversation had taken place between him and Kabila’s team.

This is not the first time that allegations of electoral fraud have been made in the DRC. The former president of the Independent National Electoral Commission also revealed that the accession to power of Félix-Antoine Tshisekedi was the result of a political agreement, concluded between politicians in order to avoid a bloodbath in the country.

However, despite the controversies, Tshisekedi officially became the DRC’s fifth president in January 2019, succeeding Joseph Kabila under a peaceful oath. Since then, he has led various reforms to improve the country’s economic attractiveness and combat insecurity in certain regions.

In summary, although the DRC has experienced electoral controversies, it is now led by an officially and legitimately elected president, who is working to improve the economic and security situation in the country.
