Russian-Ukrainian crisis: African leaders on a peace mission in Ukraine and Russia

African countries are bearing the brunt of the consequences of the Russian-Ukrainian crisis with rising fuel and food prices, inflation and financial instability. It is in this context that the South African President, Cyril Ramaphosa, accompanied by other African leaders, announces a peace mission in Ukraine and Russia. According to his cabinet, the goal is to explore ways to end the conflict during upcoming engagements with Presidents Putin and Zelensky. This initiative is welcomed by the UN Secretary General, Antonio Guterres.

Cyril Ramaphosa spoke by telephone with his Russian counterpart, Vladimir Putin, about the peacekeeping mission. The latter hailed the initiative of African leaders and said he was ready to receive them. The two personalities also discussed the Russia-Africa Summit to be held next July in Saint Petersburg.

The South African President recalls that this initiative follows a discussion between African leaders which took place on Monday, June 5, 2023. This peace mission can contribute to the easing of tension and a return to economic stability for African countries.

In sum, with this peace mission in Ukraine and Russia, African leaders continue to show their commitment to peace and stability in the world.
