The IX Games of La Francophonie, which ended on Sunday August 6 in Kinshasa, were a milestone event for the 37 participating states and governments. Among these countries, Niger sent a delegation which fully participated in these games. I had the opportunity to speak with Kotondi Amadou Tchec, a member of this delegation, who shared with me the importance of Nigerien culture.
In our conversation, Kotondi Amadou Tchec mentioned a unique aspect of Nigerien culture: “joking cousinhood.” This fascinating concept is used to resolve conflicts in a humorous way. Indeed, when two individuals are at odds, they refer to each other as cousins and begin to tease each other in a light and fun way. This defuses tensions and creates a climate of relaxation conducive to the peaceful resolution of disagreements.
But joking cousinhood goes beyond simple conflict resolution. It is considered a real social institution in Niger, forming an integral part of the daily life of Nigeriens. This practice strengthens community ties and promotes solidarity among members of society. It also contributes to the preservation of peace and harmony within the community.
By evoking joking cousinhood, Kotondi Amadou Tchec highlights the importance of tradition and culture in Nigerien society. It also underlines the ability of the people of Niger to resolve conflicts peacefully and to promote living together.
The Francophonie Games were an opportunity for Niger to share its cultural richness with the other participating delegations. Through the various artistic and sporting competitions, the country was able to highlight its heritage and its diversity. It was also an opportunity for Nigeriens to strengthen ties with other French-speaking countries and to celebrate the common language and culture.
Beyond sporting performances, the Games of La Francophonie have promoted open-mindedness, mutual respect and cultural exchange. This event was a real showcase for the Francophonie and strengthened the links between the different cultures present.
The Jeux de la Francophonie in Kinshasa were a success in many ways. Thanks to the participation of Niger and its delegation, the Nigerien culture could be highlighted and appreciated by the other participating countries. Joking cousinhood, as a unique cultural practice, captured attention and shared a fascinating aspect of Nigerien society.
Closing our interview, Kotondi Amadou Tchec expressed his satisfaction at having been able to represent Niger at the Francophonie Games and to contribute to the promotion of Nigerien culture.. He stressed the importance of preserving traditions and cultural diversity to ensure a harmonious and enriching future.
The Games of La Francophonie are therefore much more than a simple sporting competition. They are an opportunity to celebrate diversity and strengthen ties between French-speaking countries. Niger, through its participation and its promotion of Nigerien culture, was able to make an impression and contribute to the success of this major international event
