“Caritas Butembo-Beni and WFP provide vital food assistance to displaced people in Oicha”

More than one hundred and nine thousand displaced people and vulnerable host families from Oicha in the Beni territory benefit from humanitarian assistance from the NGO Caritas Butembo-Beni, in collaboration with the World Food Program (WFP). This intervention aims to meet the essential needs of these populations affected by the attacks and massacres of the ADF rebels.

The assistance provided consists mainly of food such as cereals, pulses, vegetable oil and cooking salt. These distributions allow displaced people to better feed themselves and cope with the food insecurity they have encountered since fleeing their places of origin.

The Oicha area was selected because of its vulnerability in terms of food security, following multi-sectoral assessments. Indeed, the displaced persons who are housed there do not have access to their fields and therefore find themselves unable to meet their food needs. Thus, the intervention of Caritas Butembo-Beni aims to provide a response to the most vulnerable populations and to relieve their precarious situation.

Imelda Kavira Shaghonere, president of the Oicha IDP committee, stresses that food assistance is a breath of fresh air for all beneficiaries. However, she recalls that peace remains the fundamental need so that the displaced can find their cultivable land and rebuild their lives.

This distribution of food, which is spread over a period of ten days, represents an important step in meeting the food needs of the displaced people of Oicha. However, it is important to emphasize that the needs remain numerous and that many displaced people are outside the official sites and encounter difficulties in paying their rent.

In conclusion, the intervention of Caritas Butembo-Beni in collaboration with the WFP aims to provide food assistance to displaced persons and vulnerable families in Oicha. However, it is crucial to continue to support these populations in their basic needs while actively working to restore peace and allow them to rebuild their lives in their lands of origin
