The Games of La Francophonie 2022 in Kinshasa: Concerns Over Health, Safety and Delays in Preparations

The IX Games of La Francophonie are scheduled to be held from July 28 to August 6 in Kinshasa. However, the departure of the athletes for the Congolese city raises concerns about health challenges, delays in preparations and the security and political situation in the DRC. Indeed, a notice from the Government of Canada asks to avoid all non-essential travel to the DRC.

Indeed, Radio Canada issued a statement noting that “not only have there been clashes between demonstrators, opponents and law enforcement during political demonstrations in the context of the general elections scheduled for December 2023, but there is threats of terrorist acts, particularly in the east of the country”. The games organizers are considering all options, including not participating or postponing them.

According to an article published by NEWMEDIA.CD, the DRC government remains committed to organizing the games, despite the challenges. The games have been repeatedly postponed, and there are still many logistical challenges ahead, including renovating the city’s infrastructure and tightening security measures.

President Felix Tshisekedi recently promised to work to improve the country’s economic attractiveness and increase security for foreign investors and visitors. However, many questions remain about the ability of the DRC to assume such responsibility in a context of logistical and security challenges.

In sum, as the DRC focuses on hosting the sporting competition, concerns over security and logistical challenges will need to be resolved before the games can be successfully held.
