Mambasa in turmoil: Youth denounce the passivity of the armed forces in the fight against armed groups
The center of Mambasa was the scene of a massive demonstration this Monday, August 7, 2023, where the majority of the population, mainly young people, expressed their dissatisfaction with what they considered to be the “passivity” of the Armed Forces of the Democratic Republic of Congo (FARDC) in tracking down armed groups that sow terror and desolation in the region.
The demonstrators also demanded the replacement of the soldiers who have been present for several years in the region, by other units more active in the fight against terrorists. In particular, they called for stronger action against the Allied Democratic Forces (ADF), a Ugandan armed group that operates in the region and is responsible for the growing instability.
Early in the morning, the police were deployed in all sensitive areas of the city to prevent the march of protesters. Despite this, socio-economic activities were paralyzed throughout the day. The youths held up posters bearing messages such as “We want the departure of the 31st brigade, we have had enough of the killings”.
In a radio interview, the administrator of the territory of Mambasa criticized the behavior of the young people, but nevertheless promised to convey their demands to his hierarchy.
This demonstration comes in a context where the territory of Mambasa has been the target of repeated attacks by the ADF since the end of July, resulting in the burning of vehicles and houses. The local population, tired of this unsustainable situation, decided to take their destiny into their own hands and demand concrete actions to ensure the security of the region.
It is essential that the authorities take into account the legitimate concerns of the population and take the necessary measures to strengthen the fight against armed groups. Citizen safety must be a top priority and it is time for lasting solutions to be put in place to end this relentless violence.
In conclusion, the youth demonstration in Mambasa highlights the deep unease and growing frustration with the insecurity in the region. It is important that the authorities respond to the legitimate demands of the demonstrators and take concrete measures to preserve peace and security in the region
