When politics and security intertwine: an overview of Congolese news

In Congolese news, the Under-Secretary-General of the United Nations (UN) for Peace Operations, Jean-Pierre Lacroix, is visiting the Democratic Republic of Congo as part of the implementation of the road to Luanda for the pacification of the DRC. This visit comes after a meeting with Angolan President João Lourenço where they discussed the efforts made jointly by Angola and the UN to promote peace, stability and security in the east of the Democratic Republic of Congo.

During his last visit to the DRC, Jean-Pierre Lacroix met with General John Numbi, heads of the Congolese national police, to discuss the security problems in the DRC. The UN diplomat also mentioned the deployment of a military contingent of the Angolan Armed Forces (FAA) in the DRC to supervise the quartering of members of the armed group M-23.

Despite the security fragility that persists in certain regions of the DRC, the Congolese authorities are trying to put in place measures to pacify the country. It is with this in mind that the project to create special economic zones in the territories of Lubutu, Aru, Mahagi and Djugu of the Ituri Province was adopted. It is a strategy to develop production areas, by creating jobs and limiting unemployment among young people, especially former combatants who have demobilized.

Beyond security issues, Congolese news is also characterized by political tensions that reflect the rise of populism and the personal ambitions of certain political leaders. This is the case of the arrest of Salmon Idi Kalonda, Moise Katumbi’s right-hand man, who testifies to the rivalry and the secret war between opposition leaders and the ruling coalition led by President Tshisekedi.

Ultimately, current events in the DRC are complex and require careful analysis to understand the issues and challenges facing the country. The media have a key role to play in objectively informing Congolese and international opinion on the events that occur every day in the country.
