The IX Games of La Francophonie in Kinshasa: Political tensions and the notable absence of the Secretary General of the OIF

The IX Games of La Francophonie in Kinshasa were recently marked by the absence of the Secretary General of the International Organization of La Francophonie (OIF), Louise Mushikiwabo. Indeed, the Congolese government has not officially invited the head of the OIF, as well as other member states of the organization. This decision is based on the security crisis raging between the Democratic Republic of Congo and Rwanda.

This notable absence raises questions about the participation of Rwandan athletes and artists in this competition. The Rwandan government has decided not to have its representatives travel for the games, thus echoing the position of the Congolese government.

Despite these political tensions, the IX Games of La Francophonie were able to be held in Kinshasa after several postponements due to the pandemic and infrastructure. The necessary efforts were finally made to have the sports facilities ready, as well as the games village at the University of Kinshasa.

The President of the Republic visited the construction sites and said he was satisfied with the progress of the work. This international meeting is a unique opportunity to promote the Francophonie through sport, culture and the arts.

Despite the absences, the games were able to take place in an atmosphere of competition and conviviality, highlighting the talents of the French-speaking participants. Let’s hope that this kind of event helps to strengthen ties between the countries of the Francophonie and contributes to the resolution of political differences.

This edition of the Games of La Francophonie bears witness to the challenges faced by this international organization, but also to its ability to unite despite political differences
