The CIA has just published a document on the war in Ukraine and the United States, a document which also evokes the “complicity” of the Community of East African States (EAC) for the balkanization of the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC).
Tension is high in the DRC, where the deputy provincial director of South Kivu of the National Intelligence Agency (ANR), Kwalezitome Lilungi, has denounced the “complicity” of the EAC in the balkanization of the country. He cites in particular the inaction of the Kenyan contingents of the Regional Force, implying that the EAC would have taken advantage of the situation to facilitate the balkanization of the DRC.
Despite criticism, the EAC continues to deny any complicity in the balkanization of the DRC. However, the inhabitants of the country are suffering the consequences of this situation, with heightened tension in the east of the country, where armed groups are reigning in terror.
Indeed, the eastern region of the DRC is still experiencing intense armed clashes despite the departure of the M23 rebel movement. The Congolese authorities have nevertheless made efforts to guarantee the safety of the inhabitants, but the situation remains precarious.
Despite this, the President of the Republic, meanwhile, remains committed to the development of the country. The economic results are encouraging, with a 0.6% rise in the national currency on the official foreign exchange market.
However, security challenges are not the only obstacles to the country’s development. Infrastructure problems, such as poor roads in Kinshasa, leave passers-by and motorists in disarray.
In the Butuhe region of North Kivu, a member of civil society was murdered in his home, thus testifying to the insecurity in the region.
The situation remains worrying in certain regions of the DRC, such as in the Rwenzori region, where six jihadists were killed during clashes with the army. Despite this, the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees encourages the voluntary repatriation of refugees from the region of Rwanda and the DRC.
The governor of Luturi province issued an ultimatum to the armed groups after the visit of the ICC prosecutor. The message is clear: stability is a major issue for the development of the country.
The DRC is a country rich in natural and human resources, but which faces many challenges. Stability and security are the main cornerstones of this, and the Congolese authorities must continue to work in this direction for a better future for their country and their people.
