The Democratic Republic of Congo is in the spotlight at the beginning of June 2023. Indeed, Rodrigue Ramazani, spokesperson for the political party Envol, held a press conference where he denounced the assassination of Francine Naba Dedamogo, an important member of his party. The spokesperson described this act as “intolerance and cowardice”. According to initial reports from doctors, the victim was subjected to torture, including strangulation.
Unfortunately, this assassination is not the only act of political violence in DR Congo. The party of Delly Sesanga, president of Envol, has also reported instances of threats, arbitrary arrests and harassment of party members. Lens Omelonga, national coordinator of communication on social networks, has been detained in the National Intelligence Agency (ANR) cell in Gombe, without giving any reason since his abduction on May 1.
Faced with these situations, the party of Delly Sesanga called on all the forces committed to change to mobilize against political violence. Political violence has long been a scourge in DR Congo and appears to persist despite efforts to end it.
In this context, the restricted access to social networks in the DR Congo represents a new concern for democracy and individual freedoms in the country. Citizens’ movements were quick to denounce this measure as an attack on freedom of expression and call for the suspension of the bill on the distribution of seats in the context of political elections.
Despite these problems, it is important to highlight the positive initiatives that are emerging in the country. For example, the fair for young Congolese entrepreneurs, which was held recently, represents a unique opportunity for the development of entrepreneurship in the DR Congo. More than 52,000 students have also successfully passed the national exam to obtain the ENAFEP in the Kasai region, thanks to the supervision of the country’s political and administrative authorities.
Although the situation in DR Congo is still very worrying, it is important to salute the efforts made by the country’s authorities. Indeed, despite lingering concerns about political elections, the CENI has been praised for its efforts by Western embassies. In addition, the Congolese franc is stabilizing on the official foreign exchange market.
In short, the DR Congo is at a critical crossroads in its history: between political violence and positive initiatives in favor of the country’s economic development, the country’s authorities must ensure that peace and stability are maintained for the benefit of all. citizens
