Transport strike in Kinshasa: the inhabitants undergo a crisis situation

Title: The transport strike in Kinshasa: a crisis situation for the people of Kinshasa

This Monday, June 05 was marked by the start of a strike by taxi and taxi-bus drivers in Kinshasa. This strike was decided to protest against the road harassment of which the drivers are victims on a daily basis. This situation creates a shortage of means of transport in the city, making life difficult for Kinshasa people trying to get to work. Drivers who did not follow the movement were attacked by their colleagues and had to immobilize their cars. This situation has created an uncontrolled increase in the prices of motorcycle races which have become the last resort for the displacement of the inhabitants.

In a press release announcing the strike which should last three days, the drivers pointed the finger at the agents of the Congolese national police and the services of the Ministry of Transport of the city of Kinshasa, who engage in road harassment preventing them from working in serenity. .

This transport strike only worsens the crisis situation that reigns in the city. Indeed, for several years there has been an increase in violence in the Eastern region and recently, a member of civil society was shot dead in his home. In addition, tension remains high in the Rwenzori region where six jihadists were killed during clashes with the army.

Despite this, the government wants to be reassuring by saying that the economic situation is progressing with a 0.6% increase in the national currency on the official foreign exchange market. The president, meanwhile, says he is committed to development despite security challenges.

We can therefore only hope that the situation will stabilize quickly in all regions of the Congo so that the inhabitants, especially the people of Kinshasa, can return to a normal and peaceful life.
