“The UN Deputy Secretary General visits Bunia to meet the displaced people of Ituri”

On the front page today in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), Jean-Pierre Lacroix, Under-Secretary-General for United Nations Peace Operations, is visiting Bunia, in the province of Ituri. This visit takes place in a context of security crisis that has lasted in the region for several years. During his visit, he will be questioned in particular about the measures that the United Nations intends to put in place to help the thousands of displaced people fleeing the abuses in Ituri.

The UN Under-Secretary-General for Peace Operations was briefed on the latest developments in the eastern region of the Democratic Republic of Congo. He also discussed with the military governor of Ituri on the security issue in the region.

In Ituri, more than one million six hundred thousand people are currently displaced because of the activism of the militiamen. The civilian populations of the region live in deplorable humanitarian conditions and receive little assistance.

Currently visiting Bunia, Jean-Pierre Lacroix plans to meet several Congolese officials and go on the ground to visit a site for displaced people in the Djugu region. He is expected to formulate proposals to help the civilian population of Ituri to return to their respective villages.
