The disastrous consequences of international sanctions in Niger: rising prices and food shortages

The consequences of the international sanctions following the coup in Niger are already having a significant impact on the population of Niger. As Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) sanctions came into force on July 30, 2023, the effects are seen in rising food prices and shortages of basic necessities. .

In many cities across the country, residents are seeing a significant rise in the prices of staples such as rice and pasta. For example, in Niamey, the capital, the price of a 25-kilo bag of rice rose by almost 2,000 CFA francs in a few days. This surge in prices makes access to certain foods increasingly difficult for the population and raises real concerns about the ability of some households to meet their food needs.

Moreover, Niger’s dependence on neighboring countries for food supplies is proving to be a source of heightened anxiety. Indeed, with the blockade of exports and imports, certain products are beginning to disappear from market stalls. Residents of Tillabéri, for example, report an absence of potatoes, tomatoes and other vegetables, which are usually imported from Nigeria and Benin. This shortage further aggravates the food difficulties faced by the population.

In addition to the consequences on access to food, international sanctions also have a financial impact on the country. The suspension of payments from the World Bank, as well as the cessation of development aid from several European countries, represents a considerable shortfall for Niger. In 2021, bilateral aid amounted to 1.8 billion dollars, i.e. a quarter of Niger’s public expenditure.

In this context, the population of Niger is preparing to face difficult weeks. International sanctions jeopardize the country’s economy and directly affect the daily lives of citizens. However, despite these difficulties, some international aid, such as that from the United States and the International Monetary Fund, continues, offering a glimmer of hope for the future.

It is essential that the international community remain attentive to the situation in Niger and consider measures to mitigate the impact of the sanctions on the population. The current crisis underlines the importance of solidarity and international cooperation in the search for solutions to overcome this difficult period and allow Niger to rebuild on solid foundations
