Route number 5 in the DRC: a dangerous and deadly road axis that highlights the challenges of economic development and security

Road number 5, which crosses the territory of Pweto in the province of Haut-Katanga in the DRC, is in very poor condition. Despite Governor Jacques Kyabula Katwe’s promises of rehabilitation, this road axis was once again the scene of a tragedy this Friday, June 2, 2023. A Hiace brand vehicle was involved in a fatal accident near the village of Malambwe, causing three dead and several injured.

The population of the region, essential for the economy of the country with the companies Anvil Mining Congo and Mushima, is completely desperate. Basic infrastructure is sorely lacking in the territory of Pweto, where the inhabitants are left behind.

Despite the security challenges facing the country, the President of the DRC has pledged to pursue economic development, allocating funds for the construction of road infrastructure. However, road rehabilitation in Kinshasa is not going as planned, leaving pedestrians and motorists in disarray.

Meanwhile, the North Kivu region remains plagued by armed conflict, threatening future participation in elections. The climate is also tense in the Rwenzori region, where six jihadists were killed in clashes with the army, while armed groups are targeted in the province of Lituhi. In addition, UNHCR encourages the voluntary repatriation of Rwandan refugees to the DRC.

Unfortunately, the peace and political stability of the Democratic Republic of Congo are in jeopardy, highlighting the importance of urgent intervention by political actors and the international community to help the country overcome these challenges.
