After opposition protests in the Democratic Republic of Congo, military intelligence arrested Moïse Katumbi’s special adviser, Salomon Idi Kalonda Della, for illegal possession of a firearm. On June 5, the services revealed that the accused wanted to overthrow the power in place and install a Katangese national at the head of the country. According to them, Salomon Idi Kalonda Della was in contact with members of the M23/RDF terrorist movement as well as with officers of the Rwandan army. The arrest was described as “political” by several voices within the opposition.
This news comes on top of a series of economic, social and political challenges facing the DRC. The country has more than 500 political parties, but few of them have developed concrete ideologies and programs. This situation increases uncertainty ahead of the elections scheduled for December 20, 2023.
The security crisis in North Kivu also endangers the stability of the country. The M23 rebellion reinforces its troops and threatens the city of Goma. Cardinal Luis Antonio Tagle came to visit Goma to bring a message of peace to an unstable region. However, discussions around security and massive population displacements are far from resolved.
Faced with these challenges, Martin Fayulu, leader of the opposition, demands a reliable and transparent electoral register for the legislative and provincial elections in the DRC. It is crucial for the country to strengthen its political stability in order to be able to solve the other challenges that the country must face, in particular economic and social.
