Strengthening of DRC-Germany cooperation: a delegation of German deputies visiting Kinshasa.

The Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) received, on Friday June 2, 2023, a delegation of six German deputies at the Palais du Peuple. The President of the National Assembly, Christophe Mboso N’Kodia Pwanga, discussed with them the improvement of relations between the parliaments of the two countries.

According to the German MP, Dr. Forest Christoph Hoffmann, representing the delegation, they have the development of the DRC at heart. “We are very interested in improving relations with the DRC. We have already had a relationship for a long time, we have supported several projects, several sectors and we will continue to do so”.

The aggression of the Democratic Republic of Congo by Rwanda via the rebels of the M23 was invited in the debates. The German deputies strongly condemned this aggression supported by Rwanda and called on the Congolese government to put pressure so that the president of Rwanda can stop this aggression.

Improving economic cooperation between the DRC and Germany was also at the heart of their exchange. The German MPs expressed their interest in discovering the many economic potentials of the DRC, in particular by visiting the hydroelectric power stations of Inga.

This diplomatic dialogue takes place in a context marked by insecurity and violence, particularly in the eastern part of the DRC. Since December 2022, the regional EACRF force has recovered some of the strongholds of the M23 rebellion, but there is still work to stabilize the situation. The mandate of the EAC regional presence in the DRC will be assessed by September.

The DRC also hopes that the intervention of SADC troops in eastern DRC will be a solution to the current crisis. The last SADC summit validated the sending of SADC troops to eastern DRC to help stabilize the region.

The diplomatic dialogue between the DRC and Germany is an opportunity to strengthen cooperation and promote political and economic stability in the country
