Political tension in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) has continued to escalate in recent times. The political party Alliance for Change, created by the former first vice-president of the national assembly Jean Marc Kabund, has just alerted to an alleged plot by the power in place aimed at fabricating new accusations to weaken their political formation and other opposition parties. They warned that firearms and bladed weapons could be concealed within the Alliance for Change national headquarters, with the aim of establishing grounds for search, charge and arrest against their main leaders.
The press release from the Alliance for Change reports that “reliable information in our possession points to a plot by the powers that be to fabricate new motives to weaken or even destroy our political formation and other parties of opposition”. The party also denounced the detention of its leader, Jean-Marc Kabund, in Makala central prison for almost nine months, despite the decision of the Court of Cassation to place him under house arrest. According to them, this detention is a strategy of exclusion of their leader in the next presidential election, and constitutes an obstacle to the exercise of democracy.
Tension is still high in the DRC, where the opposition is fighting for an impartial National Independent Electoral Commission and the transparency of the electoral process. Elections in the DRC took place in 2018, but the opposition is still contesting the results.
This new revelation from the Alliance for Change only reinforces the mistrust of the opposition towards the power in place. However, it is important to review the evidence before drawing conclusions. The charges against power must be proven.
Finally, the situation in the DRC remains unstable, it is hoped that the stakeholders will quickly find solutions for a peaceful dialogue and a transparent electoral process in order to guarantee peace and stability in the country.
