“Political crisis in West Africa: Military juntas in Niger, Mali and Burkina Faso strengthen their ties in the face of the jihadist threat”

News in West Africa continues to be marked by the political situation in Niger. While ECOWAS is considering a military intervention against the putschists, a delegation from the regional organization led by Nigerian General Abdulsalami Abubakar is currently in Niamey to begin negotiations with the junta.

At the same time, General Salifou Mody, number 2 of the Nigerien junta, went to Bamako to meet the Malian authorities, in particular the Malian President, Colonel Assimi Goïta. This visit is not a coincidence, because Salifou Mody had already met Colonel Goïta last March, which led to his dismissal from his position as chief of staff by Nigerien President Mohamed Bazoum.

In a joint statement, the Malian and Burkinabè juntas expressed their support for the Nigerien putschists and warned that any military intervention would be considered a declaration of war on their respective countries, leading to their withdrawal from ECOWAS. Moreover, they refused to comply with the economic blockade imposed by the regional organization.

This series of events suggests a rapprochement between the putschist regimes in the region, notably Mali, Burkina Faso and Niger, to deal with the growing threat from jihadist groups. While ECOWAS seeks diplomatic solutions to resolve the crisis, it seems that the military juntas prefer to strengthen their ties and coordinate their actions.

However, it is important to note that the different stakeholders need to find a balance between political stability and the promotion of democracy. Military interventions and coup regimes are not lasting solutions and can jeopardize progress in development and respect for human rights.

It is therefore crucial that the international community continue to support efforts for democratic consolidation and transparent governance in the region, while guaranteeing security and peace for the people. The situation in Niger and the reactions of neighboring countries will continue to evolve, and it is important to remain attentive to future developments
