“DRC: Ituri militias sign historic agreement to end violence”

The province of Ituri in the Democratic Republic of Congo has been plagued by armed conflict for several years, but a glimmer of hope is emerging on the horizon. On Thursday June 1, 2023, four of the local armed groups, namely FRPI, FPIC, URDPC/CODECO and MAPI, signed a memorandum of understanding to end violence against civilians, facilitate free movement and allow the return of displaced persons .

Major General Peter Chirimwami, who represented the provincial authority, believes that the solution to this conflict will only come from the Iturians themselves. Provincial deputy Mugisa Byarufu, elected from the territory of Djugu where the armed group CODECO operates, insists on the need to force all armed groups to lay down their arms.

However, these militias must now move from commitments to action, and activists such as Christophe Munyanderu are waiting to see concrete results. The international community, represented by MONUSCO, welcomes the signing of this agreement, but remains vigilant as to its implementation on the ground.

Despite this positive development, the situation in the DRC remains tense, with police repression and the risk of internet shutdowns as the elections approach. Opposition leaders are fighting for an impartial CENI, while the Congolese Prime Minister attends Erdogan’s inauguration in Turkey, hoping to prepare new investment projects for the DRC.

Faced with this turbulent current situation, the work for the IX Games of La Francophonie in Kinshasa is progressing well, and offers a glimmer of hope for the Congolese, who need moments of gathering and celebration to find a little serenity.

In short, the DRC is a country on the move, with positive progress but also challenges to be met. Follow the news on the Fatshimètre blog so you don’t miss any developments in this fascinating and complex country.
