Democratic Republic of Congo: the security situation analyzed at an ICGLR conference

The security situation in the Democratic Republic of Congo was discussed during the 10th conference of the ICGLR (International Conference on the Great Lakes Region) held in Luanda, Angola. This conference was convened by the current President of the ICGLR, João Manuel Gonçalves Lourenço, who is also the President of the Republic of Angola and the mediator appointed to facilitate dialogue between the DRC and the Republic of Rwanda.

The aim of the conference was to analyze the security situation in eastern DRC and the Republic of Sudan. President Lourenço also provided an update on the Luanda and Nairobi processes. There would be talk in the coming days of the holding of a quadripartite meeting including the East African Community (EAC), the CIRGL and the Economic Community of Central African States (ECCAS), under the coordination of the African Union.

The Chairperson of the African Union Commission, Moussa Faki Mahamat, welcomed this initiative. However, he expressed concern over the deteriorating situation in Khartoum, the capital of Sudan.

Congolese President Félix Tshisekedi and his representatives were present at this conference. They participated in the work behind closed doors before producing a final press release.

Discussions on the security situation in the DRC are becoming increasingly urgent, as several regions of the country are plagued by violence and conflict, particularly in the East. It is therefore important to carry out initiatives to find solutions to these crises.
