“Cardinal Luis António Tagle, envoy of the Pope, visits the DRC in an uncertain security context”

News: Cardinal Luis António Tagle visits the DRC

From June 12 to 13, 2023, the city of Goma will receive Cardinal Luis António Tagle, envoy of Pope Francis and Pro-Prefect of the Dicastery for Evangelization. This visit is part of that of the sovereign pontiff, which was canceled last February for security reasons.

This visit by the Cardinal is motivated by the compassion that Francis wishes to express towards the victims of the war as well as those who have suffered the effects of the eruption of the Nyiragongo volcano. Msgr. Willy Ngumbi, Bishop of Goma, recently called on the population to come and listen to the message of peace, reconciliation and forgiveness from the Pope’s envoy on behalf of the Holy Father, on June 13 at Mount Carmel Church.

Thus, despite the threats of insecurity hovering around the city of Goma, Bishop Willy Ngumbi was reassured about the security measures that have been taken to ensure the tranquility of visitors. The FARDC, the regional force of the EAC, Monusco, Wazalendo were mobilized to contain any form of insecurity.
Goma is therefore looking forward to this symbolic visit to the Catholic Church which will offer residents a glimmer of hope in these uncertain times in the country.
