Women’s rights in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) are a hot topic that requires special attention. This is why the Deputy Prime Minister in charge of Public Service recently launched the new session of “Development Tuesday (MdD)” to highlight the importance of gender equality. In his speech, he pointed out that, although women leaders are key actors in development, their participation in decision-making processes remains insufficient.
The Minister called for the eradication of gender-based discrimination and the promotion of the under-representation of women in decision-making positions, which should no longer be considered a mere priority, but rather an absolute emergency. He also pointed out that sexual and gender-based violence in the workplace as well as the under-representation of women in positions of responsibility deprive the country of a potentially crucial economic contribution.
However, the Deputy Prime Minister said that with the help of women leaders and organizations such as the Permanent Consultation Framework for Congolese Women (CAFCO), his cabinet is working on a real gender equality strategy, in order to provide the same opportunities for men and women in their work and to ensure that equality continues in promotions from grade to the highest level.
However, more should be done to make the DRC an example of respect for women’s rights in Africa. The policy should be strengthened and stricter measures should be taken against gender-based violence. Efforts to promote gender equality should also be better coordinated, as should measures to support vulnerable women and girls.
The DRC must step up its efforts to protect its citizens, especially the most vulnerable. This can be achieved by restoring security in areas affected by armed conflict and investing in economic and social infrastructure, such as education and health. This can only be achieved through concerted action by governments, civil society and the private sector.
Ultimately, the key to success lies in promoting gender equality at all levels of society and in the active participation of women in decision-making. This will strengthen political stability, social cohesion and economic growth, while promoting the well-being of all Congolese citizens.
