“Strengthening SMEs: how Congolese civil society organizations support traders to boost the economy and fight against poverty”

The Small and Medium Enterprises (SME) sector in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) plays a vital role in economic growth, job creation and poverty reduction. To support the development of this strategic sector, Congolese civil society organizations have benefited from funding from UN Women to raise awareness and build the capacity of traders in different markets in the country.

As part of the project “Support Project for the Development of Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises” (PADMPME), the Consultation Framework for Congolese Women (CAFCO) and the Association of Women Entrepreneurs of Congo (AFEECO) conducted field activities aimed at educating sellers on state requirements regarding formal commerce, advocacy, hygiene and many other aspects important for the development of their commercial activities.

The two-year project aims to support the growth of SMEs, create entrepreneurship opportunities for young people and women, and improve the business environment. The vendors in the Congolese markets have thus been able to acquire new skills and knowledge thanks to this initiative, which will enable them to defend their interests before the authorities and to improve their activities.

However, despite the efforts made by civil society organizations, there are challenges to overcome. For example, the “one-stop shop” responsible for issuing legal documents to sellers so that they comply with the country’s laws is encountering difficulties. It is essential to improve this system to facilitate the administrative procedures for traders.

The speakers at the press conference pointed out that the vendors expected funds to strengthen their activities, but the civil society organizations provided them with advocacy tools and mechanisms to assert their interests. They also mentioned that traditional authorities, such as customary chiefs, have been involved in promoting the commercial activities of women and young people.

The beneficiaries of this program expressed their gratitude to the partner organizations and underlined the importance of continuing to support them, as they still have a lot to learn.

In conclusion, strengthening SMEs in the DRC is a crucial issue for economic growth and poverty reduction. Thanks to projects such as PADMPME and the involvement of civil society, Congolese traders can benefit from valuable support to strengthen their skills and develop their activities. However, there is also a need to improve administrative services and overcome some challenges to ensure an enabling environment for SMEs in the country
