**Rural Transformation in Southern Africa: A Retreat to Operationalize the Kinshasa Declaration**
The African Union Development Agency (AUDA NEPAD), in collaboration with SADC and the World Food Program (WFP), recently organized a two-day retreat in Magaliesburg, South Africa. The objective of this retreat was to operationalize the implementation of the Kinshasa Declaration on Rural Transformation in Southern Africa.
The Kinshasa Declaration was adopted at the Quadripartite Summit held in Angola, which emphasized the urgency of providing essential services and food aid to affected populations in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC). As part of this approach, WFP, AUDA NEPAD and SADC are working together to address the root causes of food insecurity in Southern Africa.
The retreat, led by Mrs. Estherine Lisinge Fotabong, Director in charge of Agriculture, Food Security and Environmental Sustainability at AUDA NEPAD, and Mr. Menghestab Haile, Regional Director for Southern Africa at WFP, aimed to give practical expression to the decisions taken at the Kinshasa summit.
It should be noted that the third African Rural Development Forum, which took place in Kinshasa in January 2022, played a key role in the establishment of this initiative. The forum emphasized that rural development is the key to sustainable economic development in Africa, given that the majority of the population resides in rural areas.
As a platform for consensus building, policy ownership and knowledge exchange, the forum has helped champion rural transformation, territorial development and planning.
This retreat in South Africa marks a new step in the realization of these objectives. The various organizations involved are actively working to provide essential services, food aid and sustainable solutions to populations affected by food insecurity in Southern Africa.
Through this collaboration and joint efforts, it is hoped that the Kinshasa Declaration on Rural Transformation in Southern Africa will translate into concrete actions and meaningful results in addressing food insecurity and promoting sustainable rural development. In the region.
