News: More than 1,500 children of displaced persons from the Lala site were unable to complete the 2022-2023 school year
In the territory of Djugu, in Ituri, more than 1,500 children displaced from the Lala site were unfortunately unable to complete the 2022-2023 school year. This alarming situation is directly linked to the attack by the CODECO militia which hit the site on June 12th.
The consequences of this violent incursion were tragic for many children. Some lost their lives, others fled abandoning their school supplies, while some had to give up school to work in the fields and support their families.
The education of displaced children is greatly compromised in these difficult conditions. Teachers at the Lala-based school, like Bonanze Bahati, point out that the precarious living conditions influence children’s mental development.
Faced with this critical situation, the president of the Lala site for displaced people calls on the provincial government of Ituri as well as humanitarian actors to intervene urgently to help these children find their way back to school at the next school year.
The displaced persons of the Lala site also express their demand for security and justice. They call on the government and its partners to guarantee their safety, to find the perpetrators of the attacks last June and to bring them to justice.
The Lala site has six primary schools, including schools in Wadri, Dedja, Tsa, Langbeukpa and Goyi, which also host other displaced children from the Savo site.
