The Games of La Francophonie in Kinshasa in 2023: A historic event celebrating the unity and diversity of La Francophonie

The Francophone Games in Kinshasa in 2023: a long-awaited event

After numerous postponements due to the Covid-19 pandemic, the Games of La Francophonie are finally organized in Kinshasa, the largest French-speaking city in the world. This world-class event was launched by President Félix Antoine Tshisekedi Tshilombo during a grand opening ceremony at the Stade des Martyrs in Kinshasa on Friday July 28, 2023.

The opening night was marked by three highlights. First, a parade of participating delegations brought together athletes from different French-speaking countries, to the enthusiastic applause of the public present. This parade crossed the playground covered with a magnificent carpet inspired by the patterns of the Kuba tribe, originating from the Kasaï region in the Democratic Republic of Congo.

Then, three speeches took place, highlighting the challenges taken up by President Tshisekedi for the organization of these games. The Deputy Prime Minister for Foreign Affairs and Francophonie, Christophe Lutundula, praised the President’s commitment and determination in resolving the various obstacles, in particular linked to the Covid-19 pandemic and the construction of the necessary infrastructure.

The International Organization of La Francophonie (OIF) also expressed its relief and gratitude to President Tshisekedi. Mrs. Caroline de Saint Hilaire, administrator of the OIF, underlined that these Games of La Francophonie are not only a competition, but also an expression of our shared humanity and the reflection of our universal values.

Finally, the artistic show prepared by the Vivendi group captivated the audience with a staging highlighting Congolese culture, its natural and human wealth, as well as its modernity. Renowned Congolese artists also participated in this artistic part, offering a dazzling spectacle.

The next day, nearly 3,000 competitors aged 18 to 35 took part in the events of the 11 artistic disciplines and the 9 sports competitions offered until August 8, 2023. Kinshasa, as the first French-speaking country by area and the second by the number of speakers after France, has demonstrated its ability to organize such an event and contribute to the future of La Francophonie.

These Francophone Games are an opportunity for participants to share their cultures, their talents and their common values. They also help strengthen ties between French-speaking countries and promote diversity and inclusion through sport and art. Kinshasa, by its success in the organization of this event, proves once again its importance in the French-speaking landscape.

Thus, the Games of La Francophonie in Kinshasa in 2023 will remain etched in our memories as a major step in the development of the city and as a symbol of the unity and diversity of La Francophonie. This event also offers an opportunity for participants to create lasting links and to magnify the richness of French-speaking culture around the world
