“Let’s celebrate the bravery of the women of North Kivu on the occasion of the International Day of African Women”

International African Women’s Day: Celebrating the Bravery of the Women of North Kivu

On the occasion of the International Day of African Women, we wish to highlight the bravery and resilience of the women of North Kivu, a province of the Democratic Republic of Congo which faces many challenges.

Nelly Lumbulumbu, coordinator of the platform of women’s organizations “Sauti ya mama mkongomani”, underlines the exceptional commitment of the women of North Kivu despite the difficult conditions. It highlights their struggle to overcome the challenges of war as well as habits and customs.

War and armed conflict are a reality in the North Kivu region, but this has not stopped women from fighting for their own development. Despite the obstacles encountered, they have succeeded in creating businesses and getting involved in different areas of intervention. However, the unstable situation due to conflicts has often hampered their progress.

The women of North Kivu not only face the war, but also problems deeply rooted in the habits and customs of the region. These traditions can limit their agency and autonomy, preventing them from fully expressing their potential.

Nelly Lumbulumbu strongly encourages her fellow human beings to continue the fight for their own development and for the return of peace to North Kivu. She recognizes their courage and determination in the face of these daunting challenges.

It is essential to recognize and celebrate the contribution of African women, especially those from North Kivu. Their efforts and their resilience are an inspiring example for all, and their struggle for equality and peace deserves to be supported and encouraged.

On this day of International African Women’s Day, let us pay tribute to all the women of North Kivu and commit ourselves to working together for a better, more equal and more peaceful future
