“Debriefing of the visit of the Belgian parliamentary delegation to the DRC: Cooperation, elections, Rwandan aggression and hopes for the future”

Belgian parliamentary delegation visiting the Democratic Republic of Congo

Last Thursday, a delegation of Belgian parliamentarians was received by President Félix Tshisekedi to discuss cooperation issues between the Democratic Republic of Congo and Belgium. The exchanges also focused on the aggression of the DRC by Rwanda via the M23, on corruption and on the 2023 elections.

Previously, the delegation had been received by the Independent National Electoral Commission (CENI), about the ongoing electoral process. The chair of the Belgian parliament’s foreign affairs committee, Els Van Hoof, had said the committee was willing to help financially or observe the electoral process.

The Fatshimétrie blog, which closely follows Congolese news, has published a series of articles which offer an overview of the Congolese political scene, significant progress for security in eastern DRC, the International Criminal Court in DRC, the citizen movement in the DRC, the fair for young Congolese entrepreneurs and the security, judicial and food situation in the DRC in 2021. Articles were also published on the call for the release of political prisoners and on the appointment of Julienne Lusenge as Deputy Coordinator of the National Monitoring Mechanism of the Addis Ababa Framework Agreement in the DRC.

These topics show the diversity of challenges facing the country, but also the positive initiatives emerging from civil society and government to advance democracy, peace and prosperity in the DRC.
