“Internal crisis at the UNC: Cascading resignations jeopardize electoral chances in the DRC”

Cascading resignations within the UNC: a sign of growing internal tensions before the elections in the DRC

A few months before the elections in the Democratic Republic of Congo, the political party Union for the Congolese Nation (UNC) is facing a series of resignations from its executives and communicators. The reasons given are diverse, but they all testify to a certain dissatisfaction with the internal management of the party, in particular on the part of the secretary general.

In a letter of resignation addressed to the national president of the UNC, Pastor Claude Mugisho, provincial deputy candidate and executive of the party, expresses his concern about the organization of the elections within the UNC. According to him, this organization does not portend a good electoral result in December 2023. He thus calls for the withdrawal of the mandate of the secretary general and to entrust it to a personality capable of bringing together all the forces of the party.

Professor Adrien Birindwa Bishikuabo, provincial deputy candidate and vice-president of the Congolese youth affiliated to the UNC, also announces his resignation. He denounces a chaotic management within the party, marked by the incompetence of the secretary general and internal conflicts. These elements go against the vision of leading the country in 2028, which pushes him to leave the UNC with his family.

Master Claude Bisimwa, communicator of the National Movement of Kamerhists, underlines the disorder in the selection of candidates as the reason for his resignation. He criticizes the imaginary figure of 150 deputies put forward by the secretary general, arguing that the current climate would not even make it possible to reach 30 deputies.

Finally, Master Sadam Mashonga, congressman executive and provincial deputy candidate, presents his resignation by calling for equal treatment of executives within the UNC and the fight against corruption which affects the management of the party.

These cascading resignations within the UNC testify to growing internal tensions and raise questions about the party’s ability to face the next elections. They also highlight the importance of internal management and unity within political parties to ensure electoral success.

It remains to be seen how these resignations will impact UNC and whether other executives will follow suit. One thing is certain, these events underline the importance of in-depth reflection on the management and organization of political parties, particularly during electoral periods
