“How can industry promote peace and stability in Ituri?”

Industry as a factor of peace and stability in Ituri

The province of Ituri, in the east of the Democratic Republic of Congo, has been shaken for several years by armed violence. Economic operators in this area have decided to unite to find a solution to this crisis. They approached Industry Minister Julien Paluku Kahongya to seek industry involvement. The Minister was reassuring and mentioned the creation of Special Economic Zones (SEZ) in the province, in order to create jobs for young people and thus protect them from recruitment by armed groups.

This government initiative is welcomed by Reagan Kambale Katsumbano, who represents the team of economic operators in Ituri. According to him, the industry can play an important role in the pacification of the region. However, he stresses that a lasting peace must be established to allow the economic development of the area.

This is not the first time that the authorities have tried to promote the industry as a factor of development and stability. The Special Economic Zone of Musienene, in the territory of Lubero (North Kivu), is in the operationalization phase. This zone aims to boost the agro-food industry and the mining industry in the region.

It is crucial to find solutions to put an end to armed violence in the province of Ituri. The creation of Special Economic Zones can be a first step in this direction. However, it remains important to guarantee a lasting peace so that the industry can fully play its role in the economic development of the region.
