“Trial of MP Edouard Mwangachuchu: the question of his nationality in debate”

Edouard Mwangachuchu trial: the nationality of the deputy called into question

The High Military Court examined this Friday, May 26 at the Ndolo military prison several pieces of evidence on the identity of MP Edouard Mwangachuchu. He is accused in particular of taking part in an insurrectionary movement, illegal possession of weapons and ammunition of war as well as incitement of soldiers to commit acts contrary to their duty.

The presiding judge of this judicial body noted that the defendant declares himself to be Congolese but he has a Rwandan soul. According to him, all the documents in the defendant’s file rather indicate that his mind is elsewhere than in the Congo. For example, when the deputy exploits his minerals, he calls on foreign, Rwandan expertise.

Mwangachuchu’s counsel pleaded for his client’s innocence: “These are baseless allegations and we will demonstrate it at the next hearing,” said Thomas Gamakolo.

The defense of the deputy also requested the lifting of the detention of his client by granting him provisional release for humanitarian reasons. The High Military Court promises to respond to it on June 2.

By analyzing the course and the alleged complicity of the MP’s co-accused police officer, Chief Commissioner Robert Mushamalirwa, the court wanted to establish the link between the two defendants in this case.

The case of MP Edouard Mwangachuchu raises questions about his nationality and has not finished fueling the debates at the trial
