The mandate of the regional force of the East African Community in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) has been renewed until September 2023. This decision was taken during the 21st EAC summit in Bujumbura in presence of Heads of State William Ruto of Kenya and Evariste Ndayishimye.
The East African military force has been praised for its “achievements” in restoring peace and security in eastern DRC. However, the Congolese government continues to denounce the cohabitation and complicity of the military force with the M23 terrorists they are supposed to fight.
In a particularly tense context with Kinshasa, the renewal of the mandate of the regional force highlights the inaction or inactivity of this force annoys the deputies of the national assembly, who criticize their presence on Congolese territory risks becoming unnecessarily expensive.
Meanwhile, the M23 terrorists, auxiliaries to the Rwandan army, continue to strengthen their numbers in anticipation of the resumption of attacks against the armed forces of the DRC.
Thus, the security situation in the DRC is a problem that does not seem to find an effective solution. The Congolese authorities criticize the ineffectiveness of the regional force while the latter defends its “achievements”. Tension remains high in eastern DRC where people have not found lasting peace
