The International Criminal Court (ICC) is interested in the fate of the victims of the atrocities perpetrated by the former warlord Germain Katanga in Bunia, capital of the province of Ituri. On this occasion, the ICC’s chief prosecutor, Karim Ahmad Khan, went there to meet the victims and discuss with the local authorities.
During its visit, the ICC delegation visited the booths of NGOs that benefit from the funds destined for the victims of atrocities. The prosecutor reassured the victims that the ICC will work in collaboration with the DRC government and MONUSCO to put an end to the crimes committed against the populations of Ituri.
“The crimes of which the inhabitants of Ituri have been victims for years will not go unpunished. Nothing will change. If you don’t want to stop, you will face justice,” Khan said.
According to Amnesty International, conflicts in the eastern DRC region have claimed more than five million lives since 1998.
The ICC is heavily involved in the fight against atrocities in the DRC. She is also concerned about women who are victims of sexual violence by taking action for transitional justice that promotes their care.
The ICC’s commitment to finding a solution to end the security crisis in the DRC is a major asset for the local populations
