The prosecutor of the International Criminal Court (ICC), Karim Khan, visited Panzi, in the eastern Democratic Republic of Congo to meet women victims of sexual violence. Committed to the fight against violence against women, Mr. Khan said that the ICC must find ways to end all these forms of violence.
During his visit to Panzi, Mr Khan spoke with the head of the hospital, Dr Denis Mukwege. Addressing several issues related to the different forms of violence committed in the Congo, the Nobel Peace Prize winner pleaded for the establishment of transitional justice. This measure would make it possible to judge the actors of the various crimes committed in the DRC.
Victims of different forms of violence also spoke with Karim Khan. Some of them held up banners calling for justice at the ICC. Mr. Khan underlined his will to work with passion and energy so that these crimes cannot be repeated.
It is important to emphasize here the need to implement transitional justice so that victims are protected and criminals are judged. The visit of the ICC Prosecutor to Panzi Hospital shows the importance of awareness raising and the work of the international community to combat sexual violence and advance the reconciliation process in the DRC
