Article: The Games of La Francophonie in Kinshasa: a major sporting and cultural event
After many postponements, the city of Kinshasa is finally getting ready to host the IX Games of La Francophonie. While the official opening ceremony will be held this evening at the Martyrs stadium, the first activities have already started yesterday. Among them, a basketball match between the DRC and Chad.
For ten days, from July 28 to August 6, Kinshasa will be the center of attention of La Francophonie. This event has been arousing great interest for several weeks. On the eve of the opening ceremony, several Kinshasa residents expressed their expectations and perceptions regarding the organization of these games.
Mr. Mayiku, photographer, believes that Kinshasa is ready to host this competition dedicated to youth.
“The city of Kinshasa is ready to host this event. The government has shown determination and will, despite the lack of support from France, which is the largest nation in La Francophonie. security, I am not worried. I know that individuals tried to sabotage, but unfortunately for them, the government is determined to succeed in the organization of this great event,” said Mr. Mayiku.
He also underlines the efforts undertaken for the rehabilitation of the infrastructures in order to accommodate the various delegations. According to him, these infrastructures will be able to benefit the country and its youth, even after the end of the games.
Jérémie Etshindo, a student at the Catholic University of Congo (UCC), believes that these games can provide many opportunities for Congolese youth.
“The games of La Francophonie can stimulate interest in sport and culture, promote cultural exchange, encourage healthy competition and potentially discover new talents. Moreover, the organization of such an event can bring a sense of pride and belonging to the community,” he explains.
Despite the general enthusiasm, some Kinshasa residents are expressing concerns about security during the games. Rachel Mbaka, a housewife, fears that trouble will arise and that acts of delinquency will occur, as has been observed in the past.
Jean-Louis Mazakumbe, general secretary of an NGO in Kinshasa, is delighted that the DRC is hosting another major event after the fight between Ali and Foreman in 1974 and the recent visit of the pope.
Remember that the Games of La Francophonie include nine sports disciplines and eleven cultural disciplines. The DRC has entered athletes and artists in all disciplines.
