Cholera emergency: The health zones of Kalemie and Nyemba in the DRC in distress in the face of a critical epidemic!

The health zones of Kalemie and Nyemba, located in the Tanganyika region of the Democratic Republic of Congo, are facing a critical situation in their fight against cholera. Since January, these regions have been affected by a cholera epidemic which is endangering the health of local populations.

According to the head doctor of the Nyemba health zone, the lack of inputs necessary to fight against this disease is worrying. Chlorination, a key element in the prevention of cholera, as well as disinfection are lacking. The treatment centers for cholera patients are overwhelmed for lack of adequate equipment to ensure the disinfection of the premises.

The head doctor of the Nyemba health zone reports several needs in terms of chlorination equipment such as umbrellas, jumpers, cups, chairs and tables. Although the Red Cross supports the chlorination sites, these are not sufficiently present on the ground, which makes it difficult to direct people to these sites to receive adequate treatment.

Despite these logistical difficulties, the cholera epidemic seems to have shown a slight decline over the past few days. The number of cases has decreased from 250 to 200 in one week in the health zones of Kalemie and Nyemba.

Nevertheless, it is essential to emphasize that the situation remains worrying. The fight against cholera requires mobilization and the supply of adequate inputs, such as disinfection products, to prevent the spread of the disease and ensure the safety of affected populations.

It is therefore urgent that measures be taken to compensate for this lack of inputs and to guarantee that treatment centers for cholera patients have the necessary equipment to carry out their mission. Collaboration between health authorities, humanitarian organizations and the international community is also essential to support these health zones in their fight against cholera and ensure the health and well-being of local populations
