“Arrest in the DRC: a relative of Moïse Katumbi arrested in a context of political tensions and serious human rights violations”

The Democratic Republic of Congo recently made headlines with the arrest of Salomon Idi Kalonda Della, the right-hand man of opponent Moïse Katumbi. This arrest was confirmed by the Minister of Communication and the Media, without however specifying the reasons for which Salomon Idi Kalonda Della was arrested. However, according to Patrick Muyaya, the arrest is part of the violence that occurred during opposition demonstrations.

Indeed, the government spokesman recalled that during these demonstrations, the opponent Martin Fayulu had been filmed giving instructions to demonstrators to attack the police with stones. The Minister also warns against any violation and promises to give details of the arrest as soon as he returns to Kinshasa.

This arrest comes in a context of political tension in the DRC as the elections approach. Many observers fear that these elections will not be free and transparent, and that the violence will increase further. It is in this context that the ICC recently launched an investigation into the atrocities committed in Ituri.

Alongside these political tensions, access to education continues to be a major issue in certain provinces of the DRC, such as Kasai. To support free education, this province has just received a donation of 30 motorcycles intended for the provincial deputy directors of the EPST.

Finally, the African Foundation for Pharmaceutical Technology has just been set up to strengthen the continent’s health system. This initiative was welcomed during the Annual Meetings of the AfDB in Sharm El Cheikh, where Suez International is also committed to access to drinking water in the DRC, in the province of Kasai Central.
