2023: The Democratic Republic of the Congo, between combat and hope

2023: A year of fighting for the Democratic Republic of Congo

The Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) has experienced a year 2023 marked by many challenges, both militarily and politically. The controversial accession to power of Félix Tshisekedi in December 2018 was followed by a fierce fight against the balkanization of the country, in particular by Rwanda and Uganda.

The reactions of President Tshisekedi, determined to defend his country against foreign economic and military powers, were both diplomatic and military. In particular, he broke certain partnership agreements with Rwanda and embarked on an international tour to make the voice of the Congo heard, far from being heard by all his detractors.

On the ground, the war is not over, but the military fronts are now relatively calm. Formal meetings of regional groups are losing importance and the war machine is running out of steam.

Thus, despite the loss of influence of the East African Community (EAC) in the region, President Tshisekedi remains determined to put an end to hostilities and establish a lasting peace in his country.

At the same time, the DRC must face many other challenges, such as the fight against impunity, security fragility, political tensions and social unrest.

However, despite the difficulties encountered, the DRC is also the scene of positive initiatives in terms of entrepreneurship and education, as evidenced by the projects of the Fondation Le Parrain or the performances of Congolese sportsmen like Oscar Tshiebwe.

In short, the year 2023 has been a year of fighting for the DRC, but also a year of resilience and hope for its people.
