Kasai: the Mbuji-Mayi-Kananga road construction project still bogged down in shenanigans and disputes between people

Kasaï, a landlocked region located in the center of the Democratic Republic of Congo, continues to suffer from poverty and isolation. The development projects initiated by President Félix Tshisekedi have not yet borne fruit, in particular the construction of the Mbuji-Mayi-Kananga road, the work on which does not seem to be progressing despite the disbursement of 27 million US dollars in favor of the Egyptian company SAMCRETE.

However, the scheming would not be unrelated to the stagnation of this project. Officials, suspected of illicit practices, would be implicated in the poor management of this project, which is not the only one to be confronted with delays in execution.

Indeed, the Kananga-Kalamba-Mbuji road to Angola is also experiencing delays due to personal quarrels. The Minister of Public Works, Alexis Gisaro, for example, is said to be behind the attribution of another section to SAMCRETE or to section it on which the Egyptians are already working, which aroused the anger of the governor of Kasaï central John Kabeya Shikayi.

As for Finance Minister Nicolas Kazadi Kadima, he does not seem up to his task in the DRC. Despite a convincing professional career in international institutions and the financial sector, he would have signed the letter of comfort in favor of SAMCRETE while a month later, he dissociated himself from it. It is also accused of blocking certain files for no apparent reason.

The Kasai region is therefore experiencing a certain immobility, which is not new. The various blockages due to quarrels between people significantly slow down its development. The solutions to get out of this situation remain to be found.
