Article: Floods in South Kivu: The Prime Minister brings the comfort of the government to the victims
Floods that hit Nyamukubi and Bushushu villages in South Kivu province caused more than 500 deaths and more than 5,000 displacements. Faced with this catastrophic situation, a mixed government-parliament delegation, led by Prime Minister Jean-Michel Sama Lukonde, went to Goma to provide assistance and comfort to the victims.
The delegation outlined social and health solutions for the most urgent tasks. The Prime Minister added that infrastructure would also be taken into account: “We want to support the OVD to ensure the reopening of the RN2. I am accompanied by a strong delegation of members of the government who will also address the other aspects according to the requests that will be addressed”.
The Office of Roads and Drainage (OVD) will be involved as well as military engineering to accelerate the process of reopening the RN2. This road linking South Kivu to the other provinces of the country is essential for the delivery of food and other goods intended for the victims.
The torrential rains that hit in early May caused considerable damage in these two villages of the province. More than 9,000 students are deprived of lessons in Bushuhsu and Nyamukubi and others have lost their lives in these floods. Some survivors continue treatment in hospitals in Bukavu.
By acting quickly and effectively, the government hopes to provide a concrete response to the immense and varied problems caused by these floods.
