The floods in the villages of Nyamukubi and Bushushu, which occurred on May 4, left more than 500 dead and 5,000 people displaced, according to government statements. To provide support and health and social solutions to the affected populations, a joint government-parliament delegation arrived in Goma, the capital of North Kivu, led by Prime Minister Sama Lukonde. This rescue team will also seek to speed up the reopening of the RN2 with the help of the roads and drainage office as well as that of the military engineers. Faced with the extent of the damage caused by these floods, more than 9,000 children can no longer attend school in the affected villages.
The images that have circulated on social networks are terrifying. We see houses destroyed, roads blocked. The surviving inhabitants, saved by the Red Cross, continue to receive medical care in hospitals in Bukavu. Unfortunately, these floods are frequent in the DRC and are often aggravated by factors such as deforestation and the lack of effective drainage and evacuation infrastructure.
