News: The National Police of Kinshasa strengthens its fight against harassment
Since the arrival of the Deputy Divisional Commissioner, Blaise Mbula Kilimbalimba, at the head of the national police of Kinshasa, a new impetus has been given in the fight against harassment. During a meeting held on Saturday July 22 in Kinshasa, the new commander of the city launched a clear warning to the harassment policemen: “The law will be applied in its rigor to any policeman who will pay into harassment”.
A first concrete step has been taken, with the order given to the police to return all license plates of individuals held by the police. The move aims to end the common practice of some police officers using these plates to pressure or demand bribes from drivers.
At the same time, the Deputy Divisional Commissioner also called on drivers to respect the rules of the road and avoid creating situations that could expose them to police harassment. In particular, he asked the president of the Association of Drivers of Congo (Acco) to instruct drivers not to create informal car parks not recognized by the city authorities.
This desire to fight against harassment is part of a broader approach aimed at establishing transparency and respect for the law within the national police of Kinshasa. The new city commander aims to strengthen trust between the population and the police, putting an end to the abuse of power and promoting an exemplary attitude on the part of the police towards the citizens.
This initiative is welcomed by many observers, who see in it a first step towards a police force that is more respectful of citizens’ rights and more committed to the fight against corruption. It now remains to closely monitor the implementation of these measures and to ensure their effectiveness in the fight against harassment and the improvement of road safety in Kinshasa
